CHARTER OF THE WORLD BUDDHIST UNIVERSITY
(As amended by the 29 General Conference of The World Fellowship of Buddhists

PREAMBLE
WE, THE WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS (The WFB):
TAKE NOTE that, on 4 December B.E. 2540 (1997), at the 56 Meeting of the Executive
th
Council of The WFB held at its Headquarters, The WFB Executive Council recommended
that The WFB should establish an international university to be devoted to The WFB
Charter objectives of promoting Buddhist education and propagation of Buddhism;
RECALLING that, on 1 November B.E. 2541 (1998), at the 20 General Conference
th
of The WFB held in New South Wales, Australia; The WFB unanimously approved the
establishment of an international university under the auspices of The World Fellowship
of Buddhists, to be known as the World Buddhist University (WBU) [Resolution No. 2].
At its 20 General Conference, The WFB formally adopted Charter of the WBU;

MINDFUL that, on 9 December B.E. 2543 (2000), at the 21 General Conference of

The WFB held in Thailand, WBU was formally inaugurated by His Holiness Somdet Phra
Nyanasamvara, the 19 Supreme Patriarch of the Kingdom of Thailand as a part of
th
celebration of the 50 Anniversary of The WFB;

RECOGNIZING that, on 13 December B.E. 2545 (2002), at the 22 General Conference

of The WFB, three amendments to the Charter of WBU as recommended by the 6 th
Meeting of the WBU Council [Resolution XII] were approved;
ACCEPTING that, on 22 February B.E. 2547 (2004), the 68 of The WFB Executive Council

Meeting in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei approved three amendments of the WBU Charter:
Organization and Procedures of the Council [Statute No. 1], Criteria for the Recognition
of Associated Centres and Individual Scholars [Statute No. 2], and Invitations to Become
Associated Centres [Statute No.3]
DO HEREBY ADOPT that, on 7 November B.E. 2561 (2018), at the 29 General

Conference of The WFB and the 11 Meeting of the WBU held in Narita, Japan, Charter
th
of the World Buddhist University (WBU Charter) was adopted, which details are as follows:
