THE POWER OF A MINERAL LIEN
As the deadline to file a mineral lien approached, our Client turned to us for collection
efforts for the oilfield services work that it had completed. When the Debtor was contacted
by an attorney from our Firm, we encountered the same obstacles to getting paid that had
frustrated the Client. First, the Debtor disputed the invoice line-by-line, raising every
possible reason why he wouldn’t pay, and assured the lawyer that he would raise every
legal defense, should we file a lawsuit.
Next, the Debtor started emailing snippets of Louisiana law to the attorney to demonstrate
all the legal claims and defenses that he intended to raise to any further collection efforts.
According to him, a lawsuit would be expensive and unsuccessful.
Perhaps this Debtor’s aggressive actions would have caused a less experienced law firm to
