Coding rules of vehicle identification code (VIN)
1. Composition of VIN
VIN shall consist of three parts: its first part is world manufacturer identification code (WMI), its second part
is vehicle descriptor section(VDS), and its third part is vehicle indicator section(VIS), as shown in the figure
below.

VIN: Vehicle Identification Number
VIN (17 digits in total)=WMI(1 to 3 digits)+VDS(4 to 9 digits)+VIS(10 to 17 digits)
● WMI: the first part of VIN is used to indicate the vehicle manufacturer, and ensure the uniqueness of VIN of
vehicle manufactured in the world within 30 years if applied with other parts of VIN.
● VDS: the second part of VIN is vehicle descriptor section, which provides the documents for vehicle
general characteristics.
● VIS: the last part of VIN is vehicle approval section, with which the manufacturer appoints a group of
character codes for distinguishing different vehicles.
