10. City of Lights:
Landmarks & Bateaux Mouches
The World Fair of 1889 was about Human Civilization (the so called
“Negro Village”), Progress, Modernization (Eiffel Tower, Train, …), while
the 1900 World Fair was devoted to “Arts Nouveaux” (decorative arts)
and the emergence of new inventions and technologies (Ferris wheel,
diesel engines, talking films, escalators, and the first magnetic audio
recorder) and Colonies. The last World Fair of 1937 was dedicated to
Modern Life. They were temporary exhibitions supposed to last few
months, but hopefully some landmarks survived to our days, such as
Eiffel Tower and the Grand Palais.
One of the best way to explore the City of Lights is to hop on a cruise
boat known as “Bateaux Mouhe” at dusk to relax and enjoy Paris from a
different angle.
