RECOGNISING THE SIGNS
OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Behavioral Changes
Noticeable changes in behavior, such as in-
creased secrecy, irritability, and withdrawal,
can be indicators of substance abuse. These
changes are often subtle, and parents need to
be attentive to subtle shifts in their child’s de-
meanor.
Physical Changes
Parents should be alert for physical chang-
es, such as red eyes, dilated pupils, slurred
speech, and sudden weight loss. These
changes can be signs of drug use or al-
cohol abuse, and prompt attention from a
healthcare professional is vital.
