VISIT TO IITA
LABORATORIES
We learned how DNA is extracted from
plant leaves, how it can be isolated and
precipitated, and why DNA remains stable
while RNA does not. The guide also introduced
us to DNA sequencing and the bases that form
genetic codes, helping us understand their
role in scientific and agricultural research.
We then moved to the Genetic Resources
Centre, where we learned how plant materials
are conserved. Scientists showed us the
germination tests carried out before storage,
how seeds are wrapped in aluminium foil,
and how pathogens are removed. We also
stepped inside the extremely cold storage
rooms kept at temperatures as low as 5°C
and minus 20°C, an unforgettable experience.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing, playing
games, enjoying nature walks, and sharing
highlights of the trip before settling down for
the night.
