The other part of governance includes when you start hiring other
people; you will need to have the right structures in place to get
the best out of your team. We shall look at this a little bit later.
Standard Operating Procedures: Humans are sometimes
incapable of self-direction and this is one of the most causes of
failure in business. When you allow your team to drift aimlessly
based on loosely defined goals, they tend to waste a lot of time on
inconsequential things. ‘Why do you major in minor things?’ This
is the question asked by Jim Rohn in one of his seminars. You
must have direction for yourself and your team by creating
procedures for repeatable tasks because this is your licence to
freedom. What does it mean to create procedures? Each function
in your business has its own peculiarity; you must determine the
best way to do things and write them down. Why? Because you
don’t have to think about it every time you do them. Thinking
consumes a lot of energy, if you already have the steps to take in
place, then your team may just easily implement it. The Japanese
maxim of ‘Do it right the first time' is one of the reasons why they
have dominated the productivity literature; not only that but more
importantly they are crushing competitors all around the world.
When you have studied the steps to take to get something done
and it is documented, whosoever is implementing the procedure,
may likely do a much better job than one just thinking about it
afresh. Does this make sense? The reason why small businesses
struggle at the beginning is that everything is in chaos, there are
so many moving parts; they would have to cope with this until they
settle down to create order from the chaos. Implementing
Standard Operating System (SOP) is the way to create order in
your business even if you are a one-man-band. I also address this
in more detail in my book ‘Goldmine of Your Mind – Your Fast
Track to Abundance' This analogy will give you an idea of the
power of Standard Operating System (SOP). Macdonald is one of
the biggest companies in the world today because of their strategy.
Comprehensive Standard Operating System is at the heart of their
success. The Big Mac you eat in London is the same as you eat in
California or Beijing etc. Do you think this is by accident?
Everything that makes that possible is rooted in careful planning.
They instituted detailed procedures to ensure consistency and
quality without fail every time, thousands of times, even millions of
