Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices

A splice can be looked upon as a multi-strand knot used to create a

permanent join or finish to a rope. A well-made splice is stronger
         than almost any knot.

         Splicing hints

It will help if you tape the ends of the strands, and a Swedish fid

will help ensure that the strand follows the right path. The splices

shown here use three-strand rope, but the principles apply in the
same way to four-strand rope, should you ever come across it. Take

trouble to ensure that all the strands of the rope are taking the

same amount of strain and everything is good, neat, and fair. Do
not trim the ends of the strands too short, as when strain is first

         applied, they may pop out.
