Double Wall Knot
Starting with the wall knot, an extra
pass is made by each of the strands.
Take care that each strand follows a
similar path to its neighbor. The
double wall knot that results is a flat
disc-like knot. We are lucky that an
example from the very beginning of
the nineteenth century has been
preserved on the top bolt rope of the
fore-top sail of HMS Victory. Knots,
rope, and canvas are such ephemeral
materials that any knot preserved
from our past is of great significance,
showing, as it does, exactly how our
forefathers used to work with rope.
1 Make a wall knot. Take one of the
strands.
2 Bring this strand round past the next or
second strand in a counterclockwise
direction. Bring it up through the hole that
the second strand sticks up through.
