A program of the Education Innovation Initiative (EI ), the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute
(SURI) enables undergraduates to conduct original research or produce a creative work under the
guidance of a faculty mentor during the summer.

The intensive nine-week program guides Bowie State students through the process of developing research
that they can publish in scholarly journals or present at conferences. At the end of the program,
participants present their findings at the SURI Research Symposium.

SURI in Cybersecurity

Bowie State addresses the increasing need for trained cybersecurity experts by providing 10 SURI

participants with real-world research experiences aimed at averting cyber threats. Through funding from
the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates grant, students engage in

active learning communities with alumni and faculty mentors, while gaining skills in a growing field that

is facing a serious shortage of qualified professionals. In addition to the SURI Research Symposium,
students also have the opportunity to present their research in other settings, including Bowie State’s

annual Grants Day and Research Expo, virtual interactive workshops and Cybersecurity Awareness Month

activities.

Bridges to Doctoral Education in STEM Program

The Bridges to Doctoral Education in STEM (BDEinSTEM) Program expands Bowie State’s ability to
support undergraduate students who demonstrate strong academic potential to advance into doctoral
education in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
