Woman Accused Of Stabbing Man To Death
Arrest Made In
Lakeland police have ar- rested a 52-year-old woman and charged here with second- degree murder. She was ar- rested on a warrant Monday.
According to police, Ms. Diedre Payne Callaway was arrested at her home shortly before 9:30 p.m.
The incident that resulted in the charge took place Satur- day at approximately 6:45 p.m. Shavar Lewis and two other people went to 1135 Mar- tin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, looking for another person.

Jerreail McLeod, who witnessed the fight, told police that he retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired sev- eral shots into the air to break up the fight and the crowd scat- tered.
McLeod drove Lewis to Lakeland Regional Hospital for treatment, where he was ad- mitted for treatment. Lewis died at the hospital on Sunday. The report from the Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that Lewis’ death resulted from a single stab wound to the left side of his back.

Man Charged With Shaking Crying Baby

Police in Daytona Beach announced they have arrested one of two suspects in a Febru- ary 23rd shooting that injured three people at Bethune-Cook- man University.
Police charged Ladell Pleasure, 21, with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of dis- charging a weapon on school property.
Police have not identified the second shooter, who al- legedly fired bullets that grazed two bystanders in the shoulder and knee, and hit a third stu- dent behind his ear. Police have not determined how many shots were fired.
It was reported Tuesday that a witness told officers he saw Pleasure standing near the silver vehicle seen leaving the area after the shots were fired.
Pleasure is being held on a bond of $12,500 in Volusia
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 19-year-old man and charged him with two counts of aggravated child abuse. The infant is a two- month-old girl.
According to police, 21- year-old Mary James and Norman Gaskins, III, 19, transported the infant to a clinic in Winter Haven last Wednesday for treatment. Doctors at the clinic discovered the child had swelling to her head and directed the couple to Lakeland Regional Hospital.
After the child was exam- ined at the hospital, she was transported to Tampa General
Hospital.

portedly dis-
covered that
she was suf-
fering from
localized
bleeding
throughout
the brain.
Some of the
bleeding was determined to be old and some was new. She also had a skull fracture and six frac- tures to the left side of her body. Doctors told police the injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Police interviewed the cou-
ple and both denied harming the baby. But, in a subsequent interview, Gaskins allegedly admitted to picking the baby up and shaking her on two occa- sions because she wouldn’t stop crying.
Police said the infant is ex- pected to survive. However, it is undetermined if she will suffer developmental issues as a result of the shaking.
He was the primary care giver of the infant during the day while Ms. James was at work. Ms. James was not charged. Gaskins is being held without bond at the Polk County Jail.
