Popular Gospel Singer And Mom Of Baseball Star Killed In Traffic Accident

A popular Tampa gospel singer was killed in a traffic ac- cident Wednesday evening. Ms. Allie Mae Preston was 71-years-old.

Ms. Preston realized her dream of having her own group and became the founder of the Gospel Links. The or- ganization recently celebrated its 35th Anniversary in Septem- ber. The group performs songs of Zion throughout the com- munity and in the Tampa Bay Area.
Funeral services for Ms. Preston were incomplete at press time. Garden of Memo- ries Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.

Florida A&M University an- nounced the death a student, Markel Omar Mazelin Tues- day.
Mazelin was a 24-year-old Public Relations student from Miami. FAMU Police Chief Ter- ence Calloway said it appears Mazelin died of medical com- plications while sleeping at his off-campus apartment at 1100 Broward Street, in Tallahassee. The Tallahassee Police Depart- ment does not suspect foul play.
“I would like to extend con- dolences to the family of Markel, and to the many stu- dents, faculty, and staff he touched as a gregarious student and entrepreneur,” said FAMU Interim President Larry Robinson.

Dean of the School of Jour- nalism & Graphic Communica- tion Ann Wead Kimbrough remembers Mazelin as a “scholar and a gentleman” who always spoke positive words over everyone.
“That’s why he will be missed,” she said. “I’ve never seen him have a bad day. We loved being around him. He was amazing.”

Ms. Preston was trans- ported to Tampa General Hos- pital, where she later died as a result of her injuries. The acci- dent occurred shortly before 6 p. m.
A native of Havana, Florida, Ms. Preston was the 4th child born to the late Charles and Rosa Bell Clary Preston, Sr. She was the mother of 4 sons, John, Sr., Albert, Jimmy, and Carl Everett, Jr., Carl Everett is a former member of the Belmont Heights Little League and re- tired major league star base- ball player.
Ms. Preston is also sur- vived by 21 grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, and other family members.
