 Sharon Carter Announces
 Candidacy For State House District 61
Former State Senator Considers Running For Office In 2020

In Hillsborough County, the name Arthenia Joyner is synonymous with “first.” If she decides to run for the State Senate again in 2020, she will again become the first Black man or woman to do so.
Senator Joyner said, “I am concerned about the way some of the votes that have been taken because they don’t truly reflect the values of most of the people in the District.
“A number of people have approached me and ex- pressed their concerns to me. Consequently, I am se-

riously considering running in 2020.”
The District 19 State Sen- ate seat is currently held by Senator Darryl Rouson.
Senator Joyner holds
the distinction of being the first African American woman from Hillsborough County to be elected to serve as both State Representative and State Senator. She left office after serving a total of 16 years in 2016 because of term limits.
Senator Joyner was Tampa’s first Black female attorney and was actively in- volved in sit-ins during the 1960s as African Americans took a stand for Civil Rights. She continues to serve as a Civil Rights Activist.
Currently, both former Senator Joyner and Sen- ator Rouson serve on the Constitution Revision Com- mission.
   Ms. Sharon Carter has announced her candidacy for Florida State House of Representatives, District 61.
Ms. Carter is a graduate of Hillsborough High School, Class of 1982. She at- tended Florida A&M Univer- sity and graduated from Florida State University.
Ms. Carter, who grew up in East Tampa, says she learned a strong work ethic from her parents. Rev. Frank L. Carter, Sr. worked for HART for 32 years, and her mother, Mrs. Earnestine Carter retired from the Hillsborough County School District as a bus driver.
“He instilled in the me the value of hard work and commitment while taking responsibility,” she said.
“My focus areas are af- fordable housing, trans- portation and education,” she said.
The 53-year-old educa- tor, who teaches reading in the Hillsborough County
School District, is the mother of 1 adult son. She’s a Board Member of ACTS, Vice Chairperson of the Hillsborough County Demo- cratic Party and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She attends St. Matthew M. B. Church.
