Area Churches Will Share The Palm Sunday Meaning With Their Congregations
     BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Sunday, March 25, 2018 is Palm Sunday. Area churches will observe the day with pastors sharing the Bib- lical meaning of the day, as well as us the palm branches as a visual descrip- tion of what occurred that day.
Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), and also mentioned in the other Gospels, when palm branches were placed in His path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.
Significance of Palms
DR. DAVINA JONES Sr. Pastor of Greater Love GreaterLovesYou.com
In Christianity, the palm branch is associated particularly with Palm
Sunday, when according to Christian tradition palm branches were waved at the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It was adopted into Chris- tian iconography to represent the vic- tory of martyrs, or the victory of the spirit over the flesh.
“For Palm Sundays and other spe- cial spiritual occasions, we like to translate and apply the meanings to the lives we are now living,” states Dr. Davina Jones.
“Just as Palm Sunday recounts the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, we ask, for example, are you ready for your own triumphant entry into YOUR purpose in the earth? Jesus fulfilled His purpose, will you fulfill yours.
“Jesus is an ultimate role model of our power from within to counter what is against us. Every day is a day to learn how to enter your Jerusalem and defeat what is holding you back from your divine purpose for the days that you’ve been assigned to live.”
“Palm Sunday is important in the life of the Christian Church and as such we will observe it and remember the beginning of Christ’s journey to the cross. We will look to the Gospels in remembrance and will have God’s house adorned in palms. Palm leaves will be provided to all worshippers to encourage us to enter into Holy Week triumphantly as Jesus entered tri- umphantly into Jerusalem. Our cele- bration will be during our 11 a. m.
service,” said Pastor Karen Jack- son-Sims.

PASTOR THOMAS SCOTT 34th Street Church Of God 3000 N. 34th St.
Bishop Thomas Scott of the 34th Street Church of God said, “Yes, we have palm branches in our main sanctuary during the worship service
and we also read one of the scriptures in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John of the triumphant entry into Jerusalem as Jesus rode in on a don- key and the crowd shouted, saying, “Hosanna, Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
He further stated, “Also on Palm Sunday I usually preach a message around that text. Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week for the Chris- tian church.”
SUPT. CHARLES DAVIS College Hill Church of God in Christ 6414 N. 30th St.
Superintendent Charles Davis said Palm Sunday is always a special day. “We prepare a special message from one of the Gospels re- lating to the events of that day.
“We don’t put down the palm leaves in the walkway, but we get the palm trees in planters, and sit them around the church.”
