BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Saturday, April 30th, members of the com- munity will gather at Rowlett Park, 2401 E. Yukon Street for the 4th Annual Mental Walk In The Park Event. The event, entitled “Tranquil- ity On The Green,” will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.
The event will feature Ms. Ebone Cruz as the Mistress of Ceremony. DJ JT will provide the music. There will be speakers, singers, line danc- ing, Zumba, yoga, and other stress free activities.
There will also be health screenings, and other events designed to present a day of relax- ation. The theme of the event is “Soothing the Soul, Rejuvenating the Spirit.”
The event is being sponsored by Ms. Vanessa Rainey Johnson, CEO and Presi- dent of Blue Moon 211, Inc. The organization, founded by Ms. Johnson, is dedicated to bring- ing attention to suicide prevention.
Ms. Johnson said, “A holistic body will im- prove the mental capacity of the community. In this chaotic world, we have been trained to move at a fast pace, not realizing that the pace we have become accustomed to has impeded our well- being.
“We were created to have a balance; there- fore, if the flow of the spirit, mind, and body is interrupted, we have confusion.
“This event, “Tranquility On The Green,” is a fun-filled community family affair, uniting the community with resources and activ- ities to “De-stress,” she said.
Ms. Johnson further said that suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals be- tween the ages 24 to 34, and third leading cause

of death for individuals between the ages 10 to 24.
“Mental Health has been overlooked in the African American community. Suicide is now overwhelmingly becoming the number one cause 0f death of our elderly. Adult Blacks living below poverty are 2 to 3 times more likely to have feel- ings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness than adult whites. And, Black teenagers are more likely to attempt suicide than are white teenagers.”
