On Sunday morning, Lakeland police responded to 624 Hillside Drive after receiving a tip. When officers arrived, they reportedly smelled the odor of cannabis and the resident gave them permission to search the res- idence.
The officers located one room in the home that had been converted into an active cannabis nursery, using en- vironmental control, an irri- gation system, electrical power transformers operat- ing high intensity lighting, and twenty-one growing cannabis plants. Some of the plants were 3 feet tall, police said.
The entrance to the room wasasmall3footby2foot
makeshift door in a closet that also had a heavy odor of cannabis coming from it. The original doorway to the room had been dry walled over. Further investigation re- vealed that the electric serv- ice line into the home had been tapped, bypassing the power meter.
The home was also located within 500 feet of Carlton Palmore Elementary School.
Police arrested Yoandris Alvarez Gutierrez, 27, and charged him with culti- vation of cannabis within 1,000 feet of a school; pos- session of drug parapherna- lia, maintaining a structure to cultivate a controlled sub- stance, and tampering with utility fixtures.
