It was a weekend of movies surpassing expectations, thanks to Will Packer and Malcolm Lee.
Two non-franchise, non-su- perhero movies topped the box office for the first time this sum- mer, beating “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Christopher Nolan’s gritty World War II drama “Dunkirk” opened this weekend and ranks first at the box office, earning an estimated $50.5 million, only be- cause it was shown at more the- aters. And #2 was this summer’s biggest live-action comedy hit, Universal’s “Girls Trip,” which earned an estimated $30.8 mil- lion.
The R-rated comedy from di- rector Malcolm D. Lee and produced by St. Petersburg na- tive, Will Packer features friends heading to the Essence
Festival and stars: Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish.
The movie’s success comes as debates about diversity in Holly- wood continue to gain steam. And the past couple of years have shown that although Hollywood traditionally undervalues movies with Black and female leads, it is only to their peril. “Hidden Fig- ures” was a box-office hit and the top-grossing movie among all the 2017 Oscar best-picture nomi- nees. Another problem too, is that movie theaters throughout the country do not show the movie in multiples and have to turn moviegoers away due to the movies being sold out.
The movie cost just $19 million to make, and its performance at the box office adds to Lee (Best Man) andPacker’strackrecord of making successful movies.

Museum To Make Changes
To Image Of Beyonce
Fans were outraged when the new look-alike was un- veiled on last Wednesday in New York, with many accus- ing wax artists of lightening the “Drunk in Love” singer’s skin color.
Wax museum officials quickly responded to the backlash, blaming poor light- ing for how the figure looked.
According to the New York Times, the statue was re- moved from public display on Thursday, although museum chiefs insist the figure is still on the floor – they have sim- ply fixed the settings of the surroundings.
“We love, respect and enjoy a working relationship with Beyonce,” a representative tells the New York Post’s
BEYONCE
Page Six. “We have adjusted the styling and lighting of her figure and she is on display at Madame Tussauds New York.”
