DOMINIQUE J. MULKEY ... died after being shot by police
A 26-year-old man has died after being shot by po- lice. The man had allegedly robbed a store shortly before the shooting.
According to Tampa Po- lice, clerks at the Dollar Gen- eral, 3110 N. 50th Street, called 9-1-1 and reported that, “There’s a man with a gun here threatening us,” the caller said, then started yelling to co-workers and shoppers in the store: “Every- body in here now!”
Police were given a de- scription of the suspect and came in contact with a man fitting that description a short distance away from the store about five minutes after being dispatched to the Dol- lar General.
Information recorded on the body camera, the officers could be heard shouting, “Tampa police get on the ground! Tampa police get on the ground!”
“Get on the ground, show me your hands ... drop the gun! Drop the gun! Drop
your gun!”
After being warned sev-
eral times to drop the gun and get on the ground, the man turned toward the offi- cers. The officers then fired their weapons, responding to an imminent deadly threat, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said.
The officers administered first aid until Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and trans- ported him to a local hospital, where he later died.
The two officers involved in the shooting were not in- jured. They have not been identified. Both officers have been placed on administra- tive leave, following depart- ment policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The shooting is being in- vestigated by Florida Depart- ment of Law Enforcement.
Mayor Jane Castor
said, “This is a difficult day for all involved. My thoughts are with the family who lost a loved one under tragic cir- cumstances, with the officers who were put into a position that required them to use deadly force, and the inno- cent store employees who were traumatized by this in- cident.
“The officers took actions today to protect our commu- nity. Now, FDLE will con- duct an independent investigation as part of a new process that ensures objectiv- ity and transparency.”
Police reportedly recov- ered merchandise that was taken from the store.
