DONTAE MORRIS
... Facing 3 Death Sentences and 1 Life Sentence
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Hillsborough County
Judge William Fuente
threw out a 4th murder charge against Dontae Morris on Monday.
Morris had already been convicted of murder in three previous trials. The judge did not give a reason why the charges were dismissed against Morris.
Morris, now 30, had been given three death sen- tences and life in prison sen- tence. A trial date had not been set in the fourth murder trial in which Morris was the defendant.
Morris is accused of going on a killing spree that resulted in the deaths of 5 Tampa men. The first mur- der took place on May 18, 2010 with the shooting of Derek Anderson and ended June 29, 2010 with the deaths of two Tampa Po- lice officers.
In July 2015, a jury con- victed him of 21-year-old Anderson’s murder. An-
HAROLD WRIGHT
derson was shot in the back at an East Tampa apartment complex. Morris was sen- tenced to death earlier this month.
Police said ballistics proved that the handgun that killed Anderson was the same weapon used in the murders of Tampa Police Of- ficers Jeff Kocab and David Curtis nearly six weeks later.
Morris was given the death penalty for killing the officers also.
He was also convicted of killing Rodney Jones on May 31, 2010. Jones, 41, died after being shot outside the Cotton Club, 2405 W. Al- bany Avenue. He was sen- tenced to life in prison without the possibility of pa- role.
The fourth murder trial would have been for the death of 25-year-old Harold Wright. Wright’s body was found on the side of a Palm River road on June 8, 2010. No trial date had been scheduled for that murder charge.
