FAMU, Tampa U. Alumni Invited To History Program
City of Tampa Na- tional Archives Aware- ness Week Programs, July 14-20, 2019
The City of Tampa is inviting the public to attend its annual National Archives Awareness Week Programs, which kick off Monday, July 15, 2019, at 3 p. m. in Old City Hall’s City Council Chambers (3rd floor), corner of N. Florida Avenue at E. Kennedy Blvd.
Alumni and fans of Florida A&M University and of Tampa will want to be there as Fred Hearns (who covered the game for the Florida Sentinel-Bulletin) re- lives the 50th anniversary of the FAMU Rattlers’ historic 34-28 football win over the Tampa U. Spartans: it was called “The Game That Changed America.”
Also featured will be University of South Florida Research Librarian Andy Huse and Judge E. J. Sal- cines, who will highlight sig- nificant events from 1919 in Tampa’s history, one hun- dred years ago. The program is free and open to the public.
On November 29, 1969 at Tampa Stadium -- for the first time in the South -- Blacks and Whites played each other in a college foot- ball game. FAMU’s legendary Coach A. S. “Jake” Gaither called the contest, “the most important game of my life.”
West Tampa’s Howard W. Blake High School gradu- ate Leon McQuay was the talk of small college football teams that season for Coach Fran Curci’s seventh- ranked Tampa University Spartans. The flashy halfback was the first Black player to sign a football scholarship with Tampa U. and was ranked among the nation’s rushing leaders. McQuay’s Spartans were seven-point favorites going into the game.
And if you were at this his- toric game you’ll want to join this celebration.
