Green Bay Packers Great Fred Carr Dies At 71
FRED CARR
Fred Carr, one of the greatest athletes ever to come out of Arizona and one of the best players in Green Bay Packers history, died on Mon- day. He was 71.
He had been suffering from dementia and prostate cancer, his daughter, Karsetta Carr, said.
Carr starred in three sports at Phoenix South Mountain High in the 1960s, before helping lead Phoenix College to a national champi- onship his freshman year.
He went on to play football and basketball at Texas West- ern (now UTEP) before play- ing linebacker for the Packers for nine seasons, starting in 1968.
"Just a couple of weekends ago, my dad's name came up, and some older men said, 'I played football because of your dad,' '' said Karsetta Carr, one of Fred's six chil- dren.
Carr's nephews, Brian and Terry Fair, were two of South Mountain's best ath- letes, as well. Brian Fair played basketball at UConn; Terry Fair played football at Tennessee and in the NFL.
Craig Liston, a quarter- back who was a year ahead of Carr and played at Phoenix Central High, teamed up with Carr on Phoenix College's 1964 national championship team, throwing a touchdown pass to Carr, while he was lined up at tight end.
"I've been running from him ever since," Liston said jokingly of playing quarter- back in high school and being chased down by Carr in foot- ball games. "(Vince) Lom- bardi called him the greatest athlete he ever had. He was 6- 5, 245 pounds and ran like a gazelle."
Carr was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1983. He played from 1968-77 for the Packers. Lombardi drafted Carr as general man- ager of the Packers in 1968.

The Tampa Bay Bucca- neers are moving on from Doug Martin after the run- ning back’s tumultuous 2017 season.
The Bucs informed Mar- tin on Tuesday that he has been released. The move will save them $6.75 million against the salary cap heading into the 2018 season.
The Bucs later confirmed the move.
Martin, 29, finished the 2017 season with just 406 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He missed five games after he served a sus-

pension and violated a team rule upon his return. Peyton Barber led the team with 423 rushing yards, and you can expect Tampa to address the running back position in the draft and/or free agency.
   Jarvis Landry Given
Tiger Woods has offi- cially committed to play in next week’s Honda Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Woods said he was still undecided prior to playing in the Genesis Open this week, where he shot 1-over 72 Thursday in Round 1. The Honda Classic tweeted the news Friday afternoon, along with a link to the ticket sales page.
Honda Classic four times, most recently withdrawing after three rounds in 2014. He first played there as a 17- year-old amateur in 1993 and in 2012 shot a final-round 62 to finish runner-up to Rory McIlroy.
When asked about play- ing in this year’s Honda Clas- sic earlier in the week, Woods said, “It will be a great sign if I do play, and I think it’d be a smart sign if I didn’t play.”
 Non-Exclusive Franchise
Tag By Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins de- cided receiver Jarvis Landry is worth any headaches he causes, even if the cost is $16 million.
Landry was given a non- exclusive franchise tag Tues- day after leading the NFL with 112 catches in 2017. The move by the Dolphins came on the first day that teams could assign franchise tags.
The tag's value is expected to be about $16 million. Landry made $894,000 last season.
Landry has said he wanted to remain with the

Dolphins, and they said they wanted him back. But his volatile personality has been cause for a concern — espe- cially on a team that went 6- 10 last year in part because of poor discipline.

Girlfriend, Seeks Custody
 Had No Idea Malcolm
Former Carolina Pan- thers wide receiver Rae Car- ruth, who has spent the past 17 years in a North Carolina prison for conspiracy to mur- der his pregnant girlfriend, opened up for the first time in a handwritten letter to the victim's mother.
Carruth wrote a 15-page letter to Saundra Adams, the mother of Cherica Adams, that was sent to Charlotte television station WBTV. He also spoke at length by phone with the sta- tion about the letter, accept- ing responsibility for the 1999 conspiracy to murder Cherica Adams and ex- pressing interest in gaining custody of their son.
"I'm apologizing for the loss of her daughter. I'm apologizing for the impair- ment of my son," Carruth told WBTV. "I feel responsi- ble for everything that hap- pened. And I just want her to
 Butler Would Not Play
Yet another New England Patriots player is saying he had no idea that Malcolm Butler would not be playing in the Super Bowl.
Patriots defensive tackle Alan Branch joined “Dale & Holley with Rich Keefe” on WEEI in Boston on Tuesday. During the interview, Branch said he “didn’t know anything” about Butler being benched for the Super Bowl.
Branch’s comments seemed to indicate he was genuinely surprised that But- ler wasn’t in the game.
Butler, who played nearly all of the defensive snaps for the Patriots prior to the Super Bowl, only played on special teams in the team’s loss to the Eagles. Many feel that his presence in the game could

have swung things in New England’s favor. Nobody is saying what really happened, though Butler did dismiss reports saying he had been disciplined by the team.
Branch’s comments come a day after Patriots safety Devin McCourty said he knew all week that Butler would not be playing in the big game.

know that truly I am sorry for everything."
Carruth is scheduled to be released from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, on Oct. 22. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in 2001 after being found guilty of hiring Van Brett Watkins and Michael Kennedy to mur- der Adams. Watkins, who shot Adams multiple times, was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years. Kennedy, who drove the car, was released in 2011.
