 Black Panther - African-
American director Ryan
Coogler has made the first
Marvel film that should win an
Oscar for Best Picture, screen-
writers, male actor ( Chadwick
Boseman) and supporting
actor (Michael B. Jordan).
Yeah, I'm the first to say it!
Boseman (Black Panther) is
T'Challa, the King of Wakanda,
must protect his isolated, tech-
nologically advanced African
nation from villains Erik Kill-
monger (Jordan), Ulysses
Klaue (Andy Serkis- played
Caesar-Ape and Gollum-Lord
Of the Rings), Tribe Leader
M'Baku (Winston Duke) and
W'Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya- Get
Out). With the support of his
tech wiz little sister Shuri
(Letitia Wright), female Gen-
eral Okoye (Danui Gurira), friend Nakia(Lupita Nyong'o), CIA agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), Mother (Angela Bassett) and Zuri (Forest Whitaker), T'Challa (Black Panther) will need all the help to stop the vil- lians and fight to the death for his nation. This was a well-written story by director Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole. Black Panther smashed the box office by bringing in $192 million in three days and becoming the fifth biggest opening of all time. All hail the King! No. 1 at box office-$242M- U.S./ foreign- $199M - (budget-$200M)- excellent- ***** classic
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle - Four teenagers discover an old video game console(Jumanji) and are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting, turning into the adult figures ( Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan) they choose to be. Action-packed but the storyline was weak. Hate to say it for a Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black film, wait for it on DVD. Returns to No. 1 at box office. Made - $379M U.S./ foreign- $528M (budget-$90M)- **1/2
Maze Runner: The Death Cure - The leader Thomas and friends ( Dylan O’Brien, Dexter Darden, Thomas Brodie-Sangster) embark on a mission to save their friend (Ki Hong Lee) and find a cure for a deadly disease. Started off slow, but picked up to making this a very good sci-fi thriller. Made - $54M U.S./ foreign- $204M- (budget- $62M)- ****
Den Of Thieves - An elite group of bank robbers called the Outlaws ( Pablo Schreiber, 50 Cent, O'Shea Jackson, Jr., Evan Jones) plan an seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank, but are investi- gated by an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff Dept. (Gerard Butler, Maurice Compte, Mo McRae). This well written, off -the-chain crime saga is well worth seeing for action fans. Check it out in the Dolby theater for the shoot out sounds. Director Christian Gudegast did a great job putting together this suspenseful thriller and the surprise ending. Must -see! Didn't feel like it was 2hrs/20mins long. Made $43M (budget N/A)- classic
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Director Rian Johnson starts the Last Jedi right where it left off with Rey (Daisy Ridley) struggling to get Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to train her and return back to the Resistance. Meanwhile, The Resistance ( Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher) prepares to do battle with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. Definitely a must see for the Star Wars fans. Enjoyed it. 2hrs/32mins long. Made - $618M / foreign- $710M-(budget-N/A)- ****
T'Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) fight it out for the throne in 'Black Panther.'
If Your Birthday Is Today: You are helpful, responsible and cre- ative. You are modest and generally like to go with the flow so you don’t make waves. It’s time to get a better understanding of who you are. Ex- plore meditation, yoga or other disciplines. This is also a year of teach- ing and learning. What you learn this year will be crucial for your progress and success next year.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): This is a productive day for you be- cause you are in touch with all aspects of yourself. You are imaginative, dreamy-eyed, sympathetic and empathetic, and yet you are also practi- cal, down-to-earth and capable of making logical, reliable plans for the future. You can’t go wrong with all this working for you.
Aries (March 21-April 19): Today you feel sensitive to the needs of others. You have genuine compassion for someone who is less fortu- nate. Fortunately, you also have practical ideas about how you might benefit them or make some positive suggestions. You might even re- search your solutions. (Bravo.)
Taurus (April 20-May 20): It’s easy to idealize a friend today. You might paint them in such a flattering light, you could fall in love with them. Oh yes, a friend could become a lover. And yet, someone older and more experienced will probably give you advice. Interesting.
Gemini (May 21-June 20): You might use your influence either directly or indirectly through a boss or someone in a position of author- ity, to help someone who is less fortunate. People in authority will listen to you today because you are both compassionate and logical. Winner combo!
Cancer (June 21-July 22): Because your appreciation of beauty is heightened today, give yourself a chance to enjoy beautiful things and beautiful places. Visit museums, art galleries, gorgeous architectural buildings and parks. Enjoy the eye candy that is offered to you.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): You feel generous today, especially to those who are less fortunate. Because of this impulse, you will help someone today. You also feel sexy and affectionate! (Let that take you where it will.) Meanwhile, discussions about shared property and in- heritances are practical and to the point.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Relations with close friends and part- ners will be warm and friendly today because you are genuinely sym- pathetic to them. You appreciate what it’s like to walk a mile in their wedgies. Meanwhile, discussions about practical matters will go well.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Someone might confide in you at work today — almost certainly. They want your advice and your counsel. You will be sympathetic to their needs and will give them sound, practical suggestions. You might also talk to someone older or more experienced as well.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): This is a yummy, romantic day! Have fun with your main squeeze. Enjoy gentle flirtations. You will also de- light and playful activities with children because you truly appreciate their ways. In fact, if you can help children in need, this will be gratifying for you.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Family conversations will be mu- tually supportive and sympathetic today. Meanwhile, you might want to make your home look more beautiful, especially because something luxurious and elegant appeals. A new purchase? A serious discussion with a parent might take place as well. A mixed bag.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): This is a dreamy day. Don’t be down on yourself if you spend a lot of time adrift in a fantasy world. We all need days like this. Since your imagination is heightened, you will be productive if you work in the arts or you write fiction or poetry. Iron- ically, you’re also mentally cranked to do serious, practical work as well. Go figure.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If shopping today, you will be tempted to buy something luxurious and elegant and probably too pricey. (Gulp.) Fortunately, because Mercury is talking to Saturn, you will make sure you can pay for it. Saturn won’t let you go overboard.
