Florida Says Sorry To 'Groveland Four,' Wrongly Convicted Of Rape In 1949
After 70 years, Florida issues an apology to the families of the 'Groveland Four' who were wrongly convicted of rape.
A decades long chapter of injustice is finally closing in Florida.
In 1949, four black men --
Charles Greenlee, Walter Irvin, Samuel Shepherd and Ernest Thomas -- were accused of raping Norma Padgett, a 17-year-old white girl.
There were doubts about Padgett's testimony from the onset, but in the era of
Jim Crow, a jury convicted the men without evidence of a crime.
They came to be known as the "Groveland Four."
And on Tuesday, after more than 60 years, the Florida House issued them a posthumous apology.
"As a state, we're truly sorry," Rep. Chris Sprowls said to the men's families Tuesday, after lawmakers
unanimously voted to exon- erate them.
"The memories can't be erased, the pain they've en- dured can't be fixed but today we have an opportunity to provide closure to these fam- ilies in the form of an apol- ogy," Rep. Bobby DuBose, who sponsored the bill that called for their pardon.
The Senate is expected to adopt the apology soon.

After Accidentally Shooting
2 Police Officers He
Thought Were Burglars
Nineteen-year-old
Juwan Alexander Plum- mer was arrested last week after shooting two Detroit po- lice officers when he thought they were men attempting to burglarize his mother’s house.
In his arraignment video, a teary eyed Plummer en- tered his not guilty plea be- fore the judge, who in turn seemed sympathetic to Plum- mer after the prosecutor tried her best to paint him as someone who purposefully shot the men, knowing they were cops.
“This case is very unfortu- nate and could have been much worse,” Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said, according to ClickonDe- troit. “We simply cannot and
JUWAN ALEXANDER PLUMMER
will not ignore the alleged ac- tions of the defendant in this case. The victims could well have been a neighbor, or a small child. The lives of these officers, who were doing their jobs, will never be the same and we must hold people ac- countable for their actions.”
