Commissioner Wants Confederate Statue Removed From Property
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
When the Hillsborough County Board of Commis- sioners meet next Wednes- day, one of the topic discussed will be the Confed- erate Statue that sits in front of the County Courthouse. Commissioner Les Miller, Jr., wants it re- moved from the property.
“These types of statues are being removed all over the country and it is time that Hillsborough County re- moves this one. We hope to find a not-for-profit organiza- tion that is willing to take it. These types of statues are di- visive,” he said.
The statue in question has been at its location since 1911 as a tribute to the Confede- racy. But, Commissioner Miller said he will make the motion to have it removed at the next meeting.
LES MILLER, JR. Hillsborough County Commissioner, District 3
He is asking members of the community to at- tend the meeting and voice their concerns. It begins at 9 a.m., on June 21st, on the second floor of the County Building.
Commissioner Miller
said the recipient of the statue must be a not-for-profit agency that receives the
statue.
On one side of the statue,
erected in 1911, a soldier is shown appearing to be proud to go off to war. On the other side, it shows a dejected sol- dier who is apparently return- ing home after the South loss the war.
Ms. Yvette Lewis, Polit- ical Action Chairperson of the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP said, “We need to show up and pack the house. This is about the African American voice being heard in this county. The city nor the county is trying to pre- serve positive African Ameri- can history. Yet, they want to preserve negative African American history. This type of history will continue to chip away at the minds of African Americans every time they look at it or walk past it. We need to speak out and let our voices be heard.”
