Suspect Accused Of
Doctor Is First Black To Head All-Women’s Wellesley College
DR. PAULA JOHNSON Wellesley College named Dr.
Paula A. Johnson, a Harvard Medical School professor, as president, making her the first African American to ever head the school, the Boston Globe re- ports.
Dr. Johnson in July will of- ficially replace H. Kim Bot- tomly, who announced in April that she would be stepping down.
Johnson, who will become the 14th president of the women’s liberal arts college, said that as its first African- American president, she feels she has a special duty toward the school.
Johnson, 54, is a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is also the chief of the Division of Women’s Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is founder and executive director of the Brigham and Women’s Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women’s Health & Gender Biology.
Johnson was unanimously recommended by a committee of students, alumnae, trustees, faculty and staff.
Shooting 2 Baton Rouge
Police Officers Dies In Hospital
One of two Baton Rouge po- lice officers wounded Saturday morning has been released from the hospital, Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola confirmed Sunday.
The second officer remains in the hospital in stable condi- tion, Coppola said.
Neither officer wounded when a suspect in a car chase opened fire on them with a rifle has been publicly identified.
Calvin Smith, the suspect accused of shooting two Baton Rouge police officers after leading them on a car chase ending in a gun battle, has died, Baton Rouge police said Sunday morning.
Original Story
East Baton Rouge Parish’s district attorney said two po- licemen struck by gunfire are lucky to be alive after a 22- year-old man opened fire on their squad cars with a rifle Saturday morning.
Baton Rouge police said they initially were dispatched to a call about someone dam- aging property, which led to a car chase that ended with the fleeing suspect crashing. The suspect, later identified as Calvin Smith, emerged with a rifle and exchanged gunshots with two policemen, according to police.
All three men were injured during the shooting — the po- licemen were in stable condi- tion Saturday morning, and Smith remained in critical condition after he was rushed into surgery.
CALVIN SMITH
Both policemen and Smith
suffered gunshot wounds when an estimated 30 to 50 bullets were fired, Moore said.
The exchange of gunfire left one of the squad cars with bul- let holes in the windshield and a flattened tire. Police units lined the area where the shoot- ing took place, and dozens of markers were placed to flag the location of shell casings and other evidence.
“How they survived is by the grace of God,” Moore said.
He said the shootout came at the end of a car chase that spanned six minutes. He said he’s already viewed dash cam footage.
“It clearly shows the officers were attacked and responded appropriately,” Moore said. No information was immedi- ately available Saturday about the type of weapon Smith used, but a witness reported hearing multiple shots fired in rapid succession.
WASHINGTON, DC — If all goes well, the Obama Admin- istration’s plan to make com- munity college free for select students will go live in the year 2017. The program, also known as America’s College Promise (ACP), will allow eli- gible community college stu- dents to work toward the first half of either their bachelor’s or associate’s degree at no cost.” Supporting two years of free community college for re- sponsible students through a $60.8 billion mandatory in-
vestment in ACP over the next ten years, this proposal will also provide low-income stu- dents who attend Historically Black Colleges and Universi- ties (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with up to two free years of college or significantly re- duced tuition.
The program is a part of a $4.1 trillion 2017 fiscal year budget, and President Obama says his budget plan is especially for those in low- income families.

CONGRESSWOMAN GWEN MOORE
Budget Committee members
Congresswoman Gwen Moore and Congress- woman Barbara Lee have written a letter to House Budget Committee Chair, ex- pressing their concern over proposed cuts to social service programs.
Both Congresswomen share their concerns regarding possi- ble proposals to use the budget reconciliation process to make sweeping changes to welfare and other vital safety net pro- grams. According to reports, Republicans plans to include reconciliation instructions in the Fiscal Year 2017 budget to reform and harm the country’s public assistance and safety net programs.
House Republicans, through Speaker Paul Ryan, have made a commitment to restoring regular order in this session of Congress. The Congress- women said major pieces of legislation, like welfare reform, should be debated through the regular deliberative process.
Congresswomen Moore and Lee said they are con- cerned that some Republicans will utilize budget reconcilia- tion instructions to overhaul welfare and repeat the same

mistakes of the past.
For example, in 1996 when
Congress ended welfare as we know it and replace Aid to Families with Dependent Chil- dren with Temporary Assis- tance to Need Families (TANF), the United States weakened its ability to help im- poverished and needy families. For nearly two decades, the TANF caseload has dropped 60 percent, despite worsening socioeconomic conditions for families living in poverty. Also, the TANF work requirements are already exceeding harsh – pushing women and low-in- come individuals into low pay- ing jobs with little to no upward mobility. Doubling down on these failed ap- proaches could be disastrous to vulnerable Americans all across the country.
Congresswomen Lee and Moore said they must support and expand the very safety net programs that are vital to com- bating poverty. They said they strongly oppose the possible use of this fast track political stunt through the Fiscal Year 2017 Budget, which would threaten poor families across the country.
MEMPHIS, TN -- A Mem- phis teen has been charged in the triple murder of a man and his pregnant girlfriend, in what police are saying is a weave-re- lated robbery.
The 18-year-old woman faced a judge after police ar- rested her and an accomplice and said she shot and killed a man and his pregnant girl- friend.
Shelby Isaac is charged with the first-degree murders of EJ Tate and his pregnant girlfriend, Edwina Thomas last month. Family and friends said Tate and his cousin run a business called
VirginHair4US.com. They be- lieve Isaac and a suspected ac- complice, Victoria Seay, knew Tate and may have bought hair from him before.
Family and friends believe the bundles of hair, valued at up to $250 each, may have been the motive for the mur- ders.
“They didn’t have to do this,” Tate’s father said. “If they wanted the hair, I’m pretty sure he would say you can have this hair. My life is not worth it.”
Witnesses told police they saw Isaac go through Tate’s pockets after she shot him.
SHALLOTTE, NC — 27-year old Marie Holmes, the woman from North Carolina that recently won the $188 mil- lion Powerball lottery, is back in the news. The first time, it was about her spending $21 million to bail her boyfriend ouf of jail. But this is time, a local pastor is reportedly suing her for $10 mil- lion for reneging on a verbal contract.
Holmes, the mother of four children, took home a lump sum of $127 million after she hit the jackpot back in February 2015. And now Pastor Kevin Matthews, who is white, is suing her for backing out of their verbal agreement. Matthews says that he is expe- riencing emotional and mental distress because Holmes no longer wants to give him the $1.5 million that she agreed to give him to purchase land to build a retreat facility.
Meanwhile, Holmes’ attor- ney, Ruth Sheehan, of The Francis Law Firm, has issued a statement saying that she was not aware of the situation or the lawsuit.
It seems that it’s true what they say: “More money, more problems!”
