MRS. BETTY JO LEAVELL
A memorial service for Mrs. Betty Jo Leavell will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015,at1p.m.atNewDawn Restoration Center, 6616 E. Chelsea Street, Tampa, Dr. Julia McMillan, officiating.
Mrs. Betty Jo Leavell was born September 6, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, to the union of Willie L Leavell and Bettie L Leavell. She was the younger sibling to her older sister, Linda Leavell.
At an early age Betty Jo, af- fectionately known as BJ and to some Queen BJ, accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized in Lake Michigan at summer camp in Pembine, Wiscon- sin.
BJ graduated from Fiske Elementary School and then attended High Park High School, graduating in 1967.
In 1969, BJ married her childhood friend and High School sweetheart, Van Jack- son, bringing forth from their union, two children, Kenya T. Jackson and Solomon Jackson.
BJ discovered she had an exceptional talent for cook- ing and cake decorating, which inspired her to enroll in Washburne Culinary Insti- tute, where she graduated as a Certified Culinary Chef. Soon thereafter, BJ’s Cater- ing was born. BJ enjoyed her business for many years even though she fought through the challenges of Lupus after her diagnosis in 1983. But, she never gave in to those challenges. BJ would always
say, “I cannot let Lupus win. I cannot allow it to beat me, I must beat it.” Even through daily aches and pains, BJ continued to press on, fulfill- ing her passion and enjoying life.
In 1984, Betty Jo joined Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois, where she faithfully served under her beloved pastor, The Rev. Dr. Jeramiah A. Wright, Jr. There you could find her working with the pre-school aged children in Children’s Church every Sun- day. BJ loved children and teens alike and had a natural, loving ability to connect with them and to always somehow bring out their best. She mentored many teens and young adults who were in- spired by her faith and wis- dom in the Lord and fighting spirit to overcome obstacles. She also worked with the Ku- jichagulia Ministry dedicated to helping people with spe- cial physical needs.
As one the founders of the Lupus Support Group at Trinity, and sometimes serv- ing as chairperson, she was dedicated to helping, encour- aging, and uplifting men and women with the disease even though she had the disease herself. BJ faithfully and tire- lessly stood strong to support this cause.
Our family was blessed with a woman of elegance and grace. She exemplified patience, humility and wis- dom. All of those who knew her were left with hope, courage and inspiration.
Betty Jo leaves to cherish her living memory: her sister and best friend, Linda Level; her children, Kenya Jackson and Solomon Jackson; her 3 grandchildren, Christian Barnes, Seniyah Alvanzo- Jackson and Gabrielle Men- doza; also her very dear friends, Connie Parker, Gustella Miller, Myla Meeks, Rosie Gerald, and Margaret Morrison; and other family and friends.

Health Advisory
With temperatures starting to rise in the area, the Florida De- partment of Health in Hillsbor- ough County has monitored the salt water beaches in the area.
A Health Advisory has been is- sued for four area beaches based on the criteria for enterococci bacteria recommended by the En- vironmental Protection Agency.
The advisory is for beaches at
Ben T. Davis, Davis Island, Picnic Island, and Simmons Park.
The advisory warns that it should be considered a potential risk to the bathing public.
Samples taken Monday were above threshold for enerococci bacteria. On Monday, March 30th, the beaches will be re-sam- pled.
When re-sampling indicates that the water is within the satis- factory range, the advisories will be lifted.
Water quality categorizations are based on the EPA’s recom- mended standard for enterococci of no more than 104 colony form- ing nits per 100 milliliters of ma- rine water.
The bacteria in the water nor- mally inhabits the intestinal tract of people and animals, and may cause disease, infections or rashes.
