DR. WILLIAM BERNARD ROBERTSON
Bernard, or “Bill” as he was known to family and friends, passed from this life, at home, on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, with his wife, Ruth, at his side.
A Memorial Mass for Dr. William Bernard Robertson will be held on Saturday, Au- gust 7th, 11 A. M. at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, 1203 N. Nebraska Ave., Tampa.
Dr. Robertson was born in Roanoke, Virginia on Jan- uary 31, 1933, to Irvin Wilcox Robertson and Rebecca (Barnes) Robertson, both of whom preceded him in death. Also, he was prede- ceased by siblings.
Bernard learned of Jesus Christ at Mt. Zion A. M. E. Church. After settling in Tampa, he joined St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. In 2016, following his move to Baltimore, he attended New All Saints Roman Catholic Church.
Bernard was a graduate of Lucy Addison High School of Roanoke, Bluefield State College, Bluefield, West Vir- ginia, and Radford College, Radford, Virginia, where he was one of the first Black stu- dents to earn a graduate de- gree.
Following graduation, Bernard began a career in education teaching at his alma mater, Lucy Addison
the Roanoke City School Sys- tem.
Bernard moved to Tampa in 2000 following his mar- riage to Ruth Ouderkirk, where he came out of retire- ment a third time to teach at an inner-city middle school (Sligh Middle Magnet). Dur- ing his time there he carried 38 students and 12 teachers to Camp Jaycee. He dedi- cated himself in service to these young people, his church, St. Peter Claver, ASALH (The Association for the Study of African Life and History), and other civic ef- forts in the Tampa Bay Area.
Bernard never lost con- tact with Bluefield State Col- lege. In 2019, the College honored him by naming the college library after him.
Bernard retired in 2012 and in 2016 he moved with his wife, Ruth to Baltimore, Maryland to be closer to fam- ily. He accomplished his long-awaited goal of writing the book of his life’s journey, scheduled to be released in February, 2022.
He leaves to celebrate his life: his beloved wife, Ruth Robertson; sister, Marie Robertson, Roanoke; daugh- ter, Victoria, New York; son, William (Cynthia), Herndon, VA; grandchildren, Eva and Teddy, Herndon, VA; step- daughters, Bettye, Hampton, VA, and Deborah Gardner (Renard) Baltimore, MD; step-grandchildren, Kevin Selman, Baltimore, MD, and Crystal Sellman, Hampton, VA; goddaughter, Alonita Vannoy, Manassas, VA; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Because education and spiritual growth were so im- portant to Bernard, the fam- ily requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: the St. Peter Claver Catholic School, 1401 N. Governor St., Tampa, Fl., 33602 or online www.stpeterclavercatholic- school.org.
