MR. HORACE WASHINGTON
A Tribute – As a young man Horace Washington launched his career as a drummer on Cen- tral Avenue. I recall him saying that, during that time, the older musicians taught the youngsters in the neighborhood how to play for free. At the time he was learning to play, he had no idea that he was learning a trade that he would carry with him throughout his life.
Even as Washington served a 10-year stint in the U. S. Army he never stopped playing music. He’s played with such bands as Julian Edwin “Cannonball” Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Tampa’s Leon Claxton.
A native of Tampa, Horace attended St. Peter Claver Catholic School. He then relo- cated to New York where he graduated from high school.
Following his stint in the military, Horace pursued his love for music and traveled throughout the country.
On March 2017 Horace Washington passed away. He was born to the union of Aneca Washington and Henry Wash- ington.
Horace started attending church at Allen Temple AME Church on Scott Street in his youth and continued for many years. He was a believer and lived as a Christian man; he was a family man and mentor to the children in his neighborhood. He loved to dress and wear suits; he helped anyone he could. He was a gentle and kind soul who enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved to smile and have fun. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Washington; his parents, Aneca and Henry Washington; his brothers, Harry Thomas, Sr., Leroy Skin- ner, Earnest Washington, and Dewey Washington; sisters, Viola Williams, Blondie Thomas, and Norma Thomas; sister-in-law, Minerva Mae Thomas; nephews, Harry Thomas, Jr. and Leon Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his pre- cious memories and legacy: nephews, Ed Thomas and wife Mary, and Anthony Thomas; great nephews, Charles Sim- mons, Jr., Percy Thomas, Joseph, Darryl; nieces, Rovena Thomas, Vilene Thomas, and Helen Thomas; great nieces, Jammie Thomas, Benesa Anece Thomas, and April; and a host of great-great nieces and nephews, their children and a host of Cuban relatives from Ybor City to Tarpon Spring, FL and oth-
ers.Peace and love always, the family.
