Milwaukee Erupts In Violence After Black Police Officer Kills Armed Man After Traffic Stop
MILWAUKEE, WI -- Pro- testers in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Mil- waukee fired gunshots, hurled bricks and at least six busi- nesses, including a gas station and an auto parts shop were destroyed on Saturday after a Black patrol officer fatally shot an armed Black man during a traffic stop authorities said.
In first reports issued to the media by police, they said 23- year-old, Sylville K. Smith had a lengthy arrest record and was carrying a stolen handgun loaded with 23 rounds of ammunition when police pulled over the vehicle for unspecified "suspicious ac- tivity."
According to reports and body cam photos, Smith raised the gun at the officer when he was shot. A second suspect who fled from the ve- hicle was quickly taken into custody.
According to the report, one victim was shot during the un- rest in the early morning hours of Monday. That person was taken to the hospital by the Milwaukee police in an ar- mored vehicle, the Associated Press notes.
An officer was also taken to the hospital following an in- jury after a rock thrown broke through the windshield of a squad car, the Milwaukee Po- lice tweeted out.

state of emergency earlier on Sunday, the National Guard was not deployed, however are on standby, as the police de- partment and other agencies worked to restore order.
The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation by the Mil- waukee County District Attor- ney’s Office, police said.

Marion Christopher Barry, the son of controversial and beloved former D. C. mayor Marion Barry, has died of a drug overdose. He was 36 years old.
Barry’s death was confirmed by Cora Masters Barry, the former mayor’s widow.
After a 2011 bust for PCP and marijuana, Barry admitted in court that he had been “self- medicating” — and that he struggled amid the death of his mother, Effi Slaughter Barry, in 2007.

Spelman College will be con- vening a task force to provide recommendations on whether it will be accepting transgender women, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
President Mary Schmidt Campbell included the an- nouncement in a welcome back letter to students at the all- women’s historically Black Col- lege and University (HBCU).
Ingrid Hayes, vice pres- i dent for Enrollment Manage- ment will convene a task force that makes a recommendation to the president on the admis- sion and enrollment of trans- gender students.
Spelman is but the latest of the prestigious women’s col- leges to deliberate on admitting trans students. All of the Seven Sisters have already included policy to accept trans women into those schools.

The task force on trans stu- dents is but one of two that is being created to review campus policy. The other task force on emergency planning will be working to “develop a set of pro- tocols and procedures for stu- dents, faculty and staff to follow in the event of an emergency.”
Reports from both groups are expected by the end of the aca- demic year.
LAGOS, NIGERIA — A re- cently released video from Boko Haram says some of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls have been killed in Nigerian air strikes and shows one of the alleged victims pleading for authorities to release de- tained militants so the girls can be freed.
The video posted Sunday on Twitter shows a veiled girl identified as one of the 276 students abducted from a re- mote school in northeastern Nigeria in April 2014, saying some classmates died in aerial bombardments and 40 have been “married” to Islamic ex- tremist fighters.
The video, posted by a Nigerian journalist, shows a fighter warning that if the gov- ernment battles Boko Haram with firepower, the girls will be killed.
It says the Chibok girls are held by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Some 218 schoolgirls remain miss- ing.
