Nexflix’s ‘When They See Us’, Story Of Central Park Five Is ‘Most Watched’ Series On Streamer
Just days into the initial round of Emmy voting, When They See Us has gotten a big boost from the streaming serv- ice that the Ava DuVernay directed limited series is on and from real world outrage over the prosecutors who were hellbent on putting the Central Park 5 behind bars for the bru- tal sexual assault of a NYC jog- ger in 1989.
Offering no actual stats or date, Netflix today sent up a very big flare for the widely ac- claimed four-parter that is al- most guaranteed to be a big contender for this year’s TV Academy ceremony. When asked to elaborate, the Reed Hastings-run streamer had nothing but a “no” to offer on questions of context, clarifica- tion, or hard numbers over its well-guarded claims. Netflix
The Ava DuVernay helmed miniseries has hit highs for the streamer and seen a key figure in the Central Park 5 case forced to leave a top legal perch

Samuel L. Jackson Fought To Balance Comedy With Action In The New 'Shaft;’ Opens Friday
When thinking about the Shaft franchise of films, com- edy isn’t something that really springs to mind in the fore- front of possibilities. But with the legendary bad mother heading back to screens later this month, in the second re- boot to carry the Shaft name, it’s readily apparent that the smooth action will be balanced by a comedic tone that the se- ries will be new to.
It’s a prospect that could scare both fans of the original and anyone new trying to get into the Shaft series with the fresh start offered by Tim Story’s reboot. But those con- cerns were put to ease to a cer- tain extent, based on what Samuel L. Jackson told re- porters and a selected group of journalists, during a set visit that took place early last year. In particular, Jackson pro- vided the following commen- tary on how he fought to keep the balance between the jokes and the action:
Samuel L. Jackson’s ef- forts seem to have worked pretty well, as in addition to the remarks he provided
Jessie T. Usher, Samuel Jackson and Richard Roundtree
above, all on hand were shown a sizzle reel for the film, put to- gether from raw footage of what Shaft had filmed up to that point. And from that early footage, the mixture of swag- ger and laughter seemed pretty balanced
The generation gap in the Shaft family is something that’s been played well in the marketing campaign for the film, so at least in that respect, the comedy/action mix looks to really be working. Three generations of complicated men, with no one to under- stand them but each other and the women in their lives, is
something that assuredly lends itself to a fair amount of humor.
And as we’ve seen in the re- actions to the looks at Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson, and Jessie T. Usher in action, the fans are ready to see this fam- ily team up to solve crime on the streets of any city they choose to hit. If everything else can line up in the constellation of jokes and jabs, this just might be the sleeper summer hit that Warner Bros. is hoping for the film to be.
Shaft opens in theaters on Friday, June 14.
DJ Khaled Brags About Beating Tyler, The Creator During 2nd Sales Week
DJ Khaled may have lost the first-week sales battle to Tyler, The Creator, but he’s proudly boasting about sur- passing the Odd Future founder in their second week on the charts.
Khaled posted a screenshot of Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop albums chart for the week of June 8, 2019 on Instagram to brag about having Hip Hop’s best-selling LP. He also took a jab at the music bundles that reportedly helped Tyler’s IGOR initially top Khaled’s Father Of Asahd.
“Fan Luv thank you for all your love and support,” he wrote. “We got the #1 Hip Hop album in the country this week!

How Jordan Peele's 'Candyman' Will Address 'Toxic Fandom' In Genre Films
Jordan Peele's Candyman seemingly wants to shake the table a little bit when it comes to the problematic behavior of fans.
Peele's Monkeypaw Cre- ative Director, Ian Cooper, spoke at the Produced By Con- ference for The New Age of Producing Horror panel.
On how Candyman could fit in with what's been done with Get Out and Us, Cooper told Deadline, “We talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s proba- bly the most problematic thing facing the genre. It typically comes with a dogma that is

abrasive and that is more re- sistant to change and permuta- tion than you would think. I think what we’re trying to do with Candyman is both be mis- chievous in how we address the relationship to the first film but also be very satisfying.”
