3rd Bi-Annul ‘Real Men Wear Pink’ Event Planned
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In 2013, members of Sisters Network, Tampa Chapter were seeking ways to bring awareness about breast cancer to the Tampa commu- nity. After much thought, the organization decided to rec- ognize men who supported their spouses during their battle against breast cancer.
The first program honor- ing these men was held in March 2013. The late Mrs. Sonia Franklin, then Pres- ident of Sisters Network, Tampa Bay, hosted it.
This year, Ms. Tonia Bascom, Chairman of the Real Men Wear Pink initia- tive, is inviting members of the community to once again take part in the event by nominating men for the honor.
The program will be held on October 7th, at the Shera- ton Tampa East Hotel, 10221 Princess Palm Avenue. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 8 p.m.
REGINALD FRANKLIN Keynote Speaker
This year, Reginald Franklin, widower of Mrs. Sonia Franklin, will de- liver the keynote address.
Ms. Bascom said, “So many times, we are focused on the disease itself and the women who live with it that we forget the men who’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty to take care of their wives, mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, and even friends.
“At the program, we will honor those men. If you know of anyone who should be recognized for this presti-
gious honor, please nominate that person.”
To nominate a man for the honors, the individual submitting the name must write a letter explaining specifically what he did to de- serve this award. The person should include details, such as time, finances, emotions, career, and their life during the time of the healing process. The letters should be limited to 250 words.
The applications must be received no later than Friday, September 23, 2016. Ten men will be chosen from the pool of nominees to receive the honor. The nominees will be chosen by a volunteer Se- lection Committee. The nom- inees chosen must be present at the event.
To submit the name of a man deserving of the recog- nition, or to obtain additional information contact Ms. Bascom at tvbascom@aol.com; or call (813) 491-3745.

Learn How To Do CPR
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Tuesday, September 13th
(today), the American Heart
Association and American
Stroke Association of Tampa
Bay will host a Hands-Only
CPR training class. The event is free and open to the public.
It will take place at the University Area Community Center, 14013 North 22nd Street. The training session will last 15 minutes, and everyone who receives the training will receive a free CPR Any- time Kit. The kit contains a self-directive DVD and a mannequin. The event will take place from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death with more than 350,000 cardiac arrests oc- curring outside of the hospital every year in the United States.
The organization said Hands-Only CPR (HOCPR) carried out has been shown to be as effective as CPR with breaths in the first few minutes during an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest for an adult victim.
Ms. Lily Conrad, Director of Communications said, “Our re- search has shown that children as young as 12 can retain the infor- mation, so we are encouraging adults and teenagers to attend. We are asking those who wish to attend to register on line, but walk-ins will be trained.”
The CPR training will be done to the music of the popular disco song, “Stayin’ Alive.’
The American Heart Association has partnered with other or- ganizations to educate millions of Americans about HOCPR. The goal of the campaign and mobile tour is to raise awareness about HOCPR as a critical skill and way to increase the likelihood of people feeling confident enough to perform life-saving CPR in an emer- gency.
