Tampa Fraternity To Receive ‘Lamp Of Knowledge Award’

On Monday, November 7th, members of the Robert W. Saunders Library Foundation will present its “Lamp Of Knowledge Award.” The presentation will take place at the library at 1505 N. Ne- braska Avenue, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The recipient of the
“Lamp Of Knowledge Award” is the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the first pre- dominantly Black fraternity in the United States founded on a Historically Black university.
The program is part of the fraternity’s Annual Achieve- ment Week celebration. The chapter is also celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Brother Ray Campbell will present the Chapter’s History.

It was founded on the cam- pus of Howard University on November 17, 1911, by faculty advisor, Dr. Ernest E. Just, along with students Edward A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman.
Some notable members of the fraternity include Dr. Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Negro History

and Literature Week, which he promoted through the frater-
nity in 1924. Dr. Woodson went on to designate Negro History Week during the third week in February. The na- tional event expanded into Black History Month in 1976.
The Tampa chapter of the organization was founded in 1946. The founding members included: Garland V. Stew- art, J. T. Brooks, Dr. Reche R. Williams, Grant Brinson, Wilson Lester, Hubert Dabney, John Henry Evans, Council Dixon, James Hargrett, Sr., Dr. James Green, Sr., and Perman Williams.
Some facilities in Tampa
were named in honor of Omega men are: the Robert W. Saunders Public Library, Ernest E. Just Elementary School, G. V. Stewart Middle School, and Judge George Edgecomb Courthouse.
The “Lamp Of Knowl- edge Award” is part of the Black History Experience Se- ries.
Fred Hearns is the foun- dation’s President Emeritus. Ms. Carrie Hurst is the Principal Librarian at the Robert W. Saunders Public Li- brary.
The event is free and open to the public.
