        KEY SELLING POINTS
Based on the author’s own upbringing, a very personal, imaginative and a funny depiction of exaggerated
          real life in the 1970s.
A comedy drama about a family who are trying to do everything at once with so many things going wrong.
The madness of Faulty Towers mixed with the weirdness of John Irving’s Hotel New Hampshire

Set on The Isle of Cumbrae in Scotland, this is the story of Helen and Jim Coyle and their very chaotic life.
Helen is pregnant with her second child while cooking fish and chips for their customers in their tea-shop. Her
waters break on their 4-year-old son Frank who is their chief dishwasher, but who still needs a stepladder to
reach the sink. The baby literally pops out on the kitchen floor, assisted by her traumatised son. This baby isn’t
exactly ordinary as he can think aloud like an adult and judges all of his family using increasingly harsh
nicknames, adding to his already dark wit.

If things weren’t complicated enough, Helen’s 14-year-old brother Grant comes to live and work with them after
being expelled from school. He has been parred off by his socialite mum May (who often makes faux pas) and
working-class painter father Jimmy who swears like a trooper.

To add to the mayhem the Coyles have also bred their two red-setter dogs and now have 14 puppies to look
after. Helen and Jim’s life becomes ever more frenzied as they desperately try to find baby-sitters for their
baby Jamie - putting him in rather more bizarre and even dangerous predicaments.

Jamie C McNeish was brought up in Millport where his parents owned first a tea-shop and then a small hotel.
He grew up as a hotel-child (started work very early) and eventually went back into the hospitality industry
owning first a restaurant and then also a hotel. He has previously written screenplays and novels, but after the
death of his mother decided to write a fictionalised account of his family and upbringing. He currently lives in
        Fife.
