(tennis serve, badminton overhead, throwing a baseball) will help the player learn the mechanics of
an overhead float serve. The best transfer is when the athlete develops the associated skills
correctly. Executing a correct tennis serve will have more transfer to a volleyball serve than
performing an incorrect serve.
The biggest challenge for young players is moving efficiently to the ball. All forms of movement, run,
shuffle, hop, jump, are relevant to skill development. Coaches should include all of these movements
in daily activities.
Much of the game is played with the athlete jumping to perform a skill. Consequently, teaching the
athlete correct jumping mechanics and moving while in the air is essential.
Having the checklist be visible to the athlete and parent is essential to its relevancy.
Having meetings with all parties regularly to review progress and the new challenges ahead is vital
to continued growth.
Moving forward, I will furnish a sample checklist for developing volleyball skills and knowledge. My
checklist will not include every component of the game but will contain items that I value. The items
that others value might be different or might occur sooner or later in the process. The important thing
is to delineate what is valued and how to teach these items. I hope to foster creative thought on how
we can better teach all aspects of the game to all players.
