Summer Learning
o Identify and promote summer learning programs
o Determine if summer learning and afterschool programs are using evidence-based programs to
increase student outcomes
o All summer care programs and after-school programs should have reading (topic of choice) and
writing components with trained staff.
o Incorporate literacy (and books) into life and technology activities
Alignment of Services
o Develop tools and assessments for organizations to evaluate their programs with common measures
Assessment & Identification
o Work with the schools to help us identify those students with reading deficiencies
o Implement appropriate grade level interventions
o Align assessments for students amongst community providers
o Increase awareness of available summer camps and support summer learning at home o Train summer camps on how to integrate literacy and STEM into camp activities
School Attendance
o Partner with schools to identify chronic absence issues (children with 10 or more absences) and provide community support to address root causes of non-attendance
o Develop a committee of youth, that represent our community, to inform all the strategies (in this category and throughout this document)
o Create positive, welcoming, family friendly school environments for children, parents and families (includes accountability for quality customer service
o Work with parents and youth (grade 5-12) to identify reasons why attendance is low and to develop a system of rewards for attendance
o Partner with community members for before and after school care (if needed)
o Develop strategies, in partnership with parents, to increase parent involvement, parent
networking, car pools, etc.
o Survey and data collection (School Climate Survey)
Identify & Accommodate Learners with Disabilities
o Increase remedial and summer learning opportunities
