Youth (4th-12th Grade)
Coaching, Tutoring & Mentoring (Year 1 Network Priority)
o Identify current tutoring and mentoring programs for school age youth and assess
additional needs for each school
o Develop partnerships and programs to increase the number of volunteers, sites, youth
involved beginning with schools in greatest need
o Develop mentoring programs that include high profile spokespersons
o Form partnerships with area colleges and universities to recruit volunteers to tutor and
mentor in the local school districts
o Increase community based homework partnerships – faith based, service organizations,
community centers, etc.
o Provide high quality training and professional development for coaches, tutors, and
mentors
o Coordinate with family literacy providers to ensure access to mentors, tutors and coaches
Reading & Writing & Math on Grade Level
o Work with area community colleges and school district to evaluate need for Grade 13. The focus of Grade 13 will be math and reading improvement/remediation designed for students preparing for post-secondary education
o Review current policies/programs for retention and remediation. Examine alternatives for these students to improve their reading performance at grade level
o Develop afterschool and summer programs with an emphasis on reading/writing in neighborhoods of highest need
Increased Access to Literacy Resources
o Increase community reading resources - get books closer to kids: Little Free Libraries, The City that Reads, Small Reading Corners
o Consider partnering with local businesses to provide free books at common places such as laundromats and barbershops
o Enable students to demonstrate learning in a fun way (bringing books to life through plays, pen pal book swaps, book clubs etc.)
o Integrate technology as a vehicle for enhancing literacy
o Increase the availability and variety of books by creating a structure for connecting
corporations with schools
o Develop programs to increase the number of books in family homes
