The 2016 Amber Valley Camp reunion
took place on Sunday 19 June commencing with the reception at the Ogston Sailing Club. Due to the ‘change of use’ of the Nettle Pub and Restaurant arrangements were made to have lunch provided at the Old Poet’s Corner in Ashover village. A decidedly good decision by the Committee this year as the carvery meal and also venue was delightful for all concerned. Sadly numbers were down this year but there were in total 8 OD’s along with Elisabeth Bowden, her son Nick and two grandchildren Emily and Jessica along with several wives. Ralph Holden made a great speech of welcome full of very amusing anecdotes of memories of both his and other’s stories. It certainly was well received by all present.
Just prior to leaving for the lunch venue several OD’s felt it would be a nice and important gesture for the Society to present to the Ogston Sailing Cub a ‘blue plaque’ outlining the fact Derby School spent the whole of the WWII years as evacuees at what was Amber Valley Camp. As archivist I was asked to bring this to the attention of the Committee at their next meeting. This I now do.
Annual OD Society Cricket Match versus DGS 1st XI took place on Sunday 3 July. As the match was a 25 over match this year we commenced at 11.00 a.m. DGS XI suggested by Chris Whitworth as the Head Master’s XI (because the majority of the 1st XI being away in Tanzania) batted first and achieved 85 for 8 wickets; followed by the OD’s achieving 88 for the loss of only 3 wickets. Current score for the Alan Sanders Memorial Trophy OD’s 5 wins, DGS 2 wins and the 2013 match not contested due to an unplayable pitch.
The 1947’ers Reunion At their invitation I attended the annual reunion on Thursday 30 June at the Georgian House Hotel on Ashbourne Road, their organiser being Russ Jones (1947-1955) from Eccleshall, Staffordshire. A full report was placed on the website plus 3 photos, in total 10 boys who started in Sept 1947 attended.
