Old Derbeian Society
Oxfam and the OD Society – You may remember that in May 2016 I reported about the purchase of the special photograph album of B&W photos of staff, pupils, St. Helen’s House and chapel as existing in May 1957. Because of the uniqueness of the find I drafted an article that had led up to this acquisition and on Monday 1 August 2016 the article below appeared in the Bygones section of the Derby Telegraph,
Derby Moor Community Sports College
The Secretary and myself agreed to approach the College with a view to loaning the lectern so that it may be used at the DGS Remembrance Day service to be held in the Michael Bishop Hall on Friday 11 November. Our contact at the college, Mike Shales who had been made up to be their Interim Principal placed this request before the Board of Governors on 6 June. The Governors readily agreed to our request and this is now being arranged. I do believe this new ‘entente cordiale’ is a most important step in the history of the Society?
16mm. Colour movie film of July 1962 Centenary Cadet Corps Parade on Parker’s Piece. Sadly due to other commitments the proposed first showing of the movie film to OD’s, Cadet Corps members and friends was not able to be arranged earlier this Summer. It is now proposed to leave this for now and instead show it at the second Cadet Corps reunion. This is planned to take place on Tuesday 6 September 2016. Reception is at 12 noon at the Georgian House Hotel on Ashbourne Road. A light buffet has been arranged and invitations have already been sent out to all known OD’s and also ex pupils to attend this event
Newly published book entitled “St. Helens House” written by Maxwell Craven Through an OD, namely Alan Goodwin, convenor of the ‘Class of 1950’ arrangements have been made to be supplied with a small stock of this new book at the cost price of £8.00. We have now obtained 12 copies for the OD’s stock of memorabilia. I would like your confirmation for this action.
My plan is to have copies available for sale at the Annual Dinner in November.
Creation of an Old Derbeian Dropbox this Summer the Society after taking
Bygones article 1 August 2016 – This covered the whole of the back page. Interestingly as a result of this article we received from interested OD’s and ex pupils sixteen contacts, all identifying masters and pupils. Most satisfactory result for the archives.
Derby Grammar School and PTA Summer Fete – This was held on Friday afternoon 17 June commencing at 4.00 p.m. Due to other commitments I was unable to attend this year.
