Eyes for Wire-Rope Ends
Wire terminals typically consist of eyed metal sheaths, called swages (1),
which are fused around the wire’s end under great heat and pressure by
a special machine in a supplier’s shop. Alternately, crimp-type fittings (2)
may be put on either by a supplier or in a home workshop. The wire is
folded back on itself and held in place by a soft metal sleeve, which is
pressed around the wire by a vise. Temporary shipboard fastenings can
be made with bulldog clips (3), U-shaped clips that slip over both pieces
of wire and are bolted into a plate that grips them securely.
