The real key to the mystery of nautical knots is knowing when and
where to tie each one—as explained in simplified language on the
following pages. None of them is hard to master; in fact, with a
modicum of practice all are remarkably easy—and useful. They
share two other critical characteristics: properly made, none of
them will slip or loosen on the job; and—again with the exception of
the splice, which is intended to be permanent—they are all relatively
easy to untie, even after being under heavy strain like the bowline at
right.
