           Background information
           The telescope is an instrument
that collects the light coming from
a distant object, gathers it in a
spot called focus and produces an
           enlarged image. This word comes
from the Greek tēle (‘far’) and
skopein (‘to see, to look at’). It was
           invented by Galileo, who showed

its use for the first time in Venice in
           1609.
The Noon mark, in the picture next
to that of the telescope, is outside
           the Wellington Carter Observatory
           in Wellington (New Zealand). This
           observatory, once the base for
           astronomical research, became the
           National Observatory in 1977 and
           has recently become an institution

of scientific publication in the field of
           astronomy.
