Hazards in the Workplace

A company has been fi ned aft er a worker was killed when he was struck by a
load on a moving crane. Crown Court heard how an employee was assisti ng in
the moving of a crucible from a re-melt furnace.
The crucible had been lift ed using an overhead crane and moved approximately ten yards
to where an employee loosened the bolts around the crucible. The crane operator waited
for the acknowledgment to proceed and lift ed the crucible a couple of feet higher before
pressing the southbound butt on.
The crane operator saw an employee in the path of the crucible and shouted a
warning while stopping the movement of the crane. The crane stopped but the
load swung forward hitti ng the employee on the right side of the head.
