Juneteenth 2021

              By Nii Badi

Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in
the US on June 19, 1865, as many slaves had not been freed after the
              Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery in America, which was not as
easy as it might seem. President Abraham Lincoln issued the
Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, but the Civil War did not end
              until 1865.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in the United States on June 16 ,
                                                                                       th
2021. This commemorates the emancipation of African - American slaves.
It is also often observed for celebrating African - American culture.
Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June
19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.

What is the essence of what Juneteenth is all about?

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United
States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence
              Day.
The name “Juneteenth” references the date of the holiday, combining the
              words “June” and “nineteenth.”

Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops
arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than
250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree.
Thus, this day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed
              people in Texas.
