Patients were not able to have contact with their loved ones since visitation was halted. “We made sure to FaceTime them and send pictures. We basically were the patient’s family and support system,” said Special Care tech, Volencia Thornton.
To protect their loved ones, the nurses, techs, and therapists had to limit their contact with their own families. “I have a daughter and was not able to see her for a really long time. That really affected
me,” said Alexcia Jones, RN, BSN. “It was really tough not being able to see my mom because we are so close,” said SCU nurse Kristen Flowers, RN, BSN. “I would call her every single day and we would talk for an hour,” Flowers added. “My husband and I slept in separate quarters of our house,” said Stacey White.
In order to keep their families, friends, and co-workers safe, nurses, techs, and respiratory therapists made sure to change PPE constantly and shower after every shift.
