ABOUT YOUR PRINCIPAL
Saga is the UK’s leading provider of products and services to the Over 50’s. The company was founded by
Folkestone hotelier, Sydney De Haan, in 1952 to offer low cost off-season holidays to retired people.
Through the 1990’s Saga Holidays was booking increasing numbers of passengers onto 3rd party cruising with
lines such as Cunard, P&O and Fred Olsen.
To satisfy this huge demand Saga started its own cruise line in 1997 under Saffron Maritime Company Ltd.
Shortly afterwards, the Saga Shipping Company was formed to gradually take on many of the operational
management functions that were initially contracted out.
The success of this step was reflected in both profitability and customer satisfaction. They give much emphasis to
that because they want to inculcate amongst their crew the great sense of belonging and pride. They strongly
encourage their crew to treat their passengers with “Tender Loving Care” and aim to achieve a high level of
customer care.
