The Modern Era
The tournament has now spanned the leadership of four UM
Chancellors, ten NUS Chancellors, fourteen UM Vice-Chancellors,
and nine NUS Vice-Chancellors. In 2024 and 2025, the event was
guided by two Chancellors whose family legacies are deeply tied to
UM’s history.
Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah
ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-
Lah, the Sultan of Perak and current Chancellor of Universiti
Malaya, is a highly respected leader renowned for his intellect,
integrity, eloquence, and unwavering commitment to unity, good
governance, and education. An alumnus of Oxford and Harvard
Universities, Tuanku is the eldest son of the late Duli Yang Maha
Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum
Sultan Yussuff Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-Lah, the former
Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, former Lord President of Malaysia,
and former King of Malaysia. He has upheld and refined his father’s
legacy, including the prestigious Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture
Series — one of the world’s foremost platforms on the Rule of Law,
Constitutional Supremacy, and Good Governance.
President Tharman Shanmugaratnam of Singapore, the current
Chancellor of the National University of Singapore, is a globally
respected economist and statesman admired for his intellect,
integrity, humility, and inclusive leadership that champions unity,
social mobility, and sustainable progress. An alumnus of Cambridge
and Harvard Universities, he is the son of Professor Kanagaratnam
Shanmugaratnam — the “Father of Pathology” at UM. In 1947, as
President of the King Edward VII College of Medicine Students’
Union, Professor Shanmugaratnam impressed the British Royal
Commission’s chairman, Lord Carr-Saunders, helping pave the way
for the College’s merger with Raffles College — a crucial step toward
the creation of the University of Malaya in Singapore.
Their personal friendship has elevated the tournament beyond
sport into a living bridge between Malaysia and Singapore.
