Piala Sultan Azlan Shah (Donor Trophy)
THE TROPHY Event:
UM–NUS Inter-University Tunku Canselor Golf Tournament
Donor of the trophy:
Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuff
Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu-lah, 34th Sultan of Perak and 9th Yang
di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.
Background:
The Sultan Azlan Shah Donor Trophy was presented to
commemorate the long-standing sporting relationship between
the University of Malaya (UM) and the National University of
Singapore (NUS) through their annual inter-university golf
tournament. The trophy symbolises excellence, sportsmanship,
and the strengthening of ties between the two institutions. As a
perpetual trophy, it is awarded annually to the winning team and
then returned for presentation the following year.
Design Description:
A large silver cup with two ornate handles, mounted on a black
wooden base. The cup features the Perak State crest above the
engraved title “Piala Sultan Azlan Shah”, with intricate floral and
leaf engravings around the lower body and stem. Its polished
surface reflects its ceremonial prestige.
Classic design:
The round shape and curved base
along with the spiral pattern are
very synonymous with formal
championship trophies such as:
• Classic sports championship
trophies (golf, football)
• Prestigious awards of the British
colonial era
Carving Details:
• Acanthus leaf / baroque leaf pattern
The carving pattern seen is the acanthus leaf
motif or baroque floral scroll, very popular on
antique British and European silverware and
plate of the 19th and 20th centuries.
• Emboss or repoussé technique
This embossed design was most likely produced
using the repoussé and chasing techniques,
where the metal part is pressed and shaped
from the back to create a relief on the surface.
