and deny Jesus, she proclaimed that Jesus is the messiah. It is
sad to note that the name of the faithful disciple is forgotten
because she was a woman but the name of the disciple who
betrayed Jesus is remembered ! But Jesus commands to
remember her action wherever the good news is proclaimed.
According to Mark the male disciples did not understand
the messiahship of Jesus, so rejected, and finally abandoned him,
but the women disciples who have followed Jesus from Galilee to
Jerusalem emerge as the true disciples in the passion narrative.
The unnamed woman who anointed Jesus is the paradigm for
the true discipleship.
The reimaging of the unnamed woman in this Mark
Gospel help us to rethink about how the church and the society
accepts and acknowledges women’s action and service. Jesus
commands us to remember those women who are partakers of
his suffering and crucifixion since the sufferings of Jesus is same
as the sufferings of the women. The ignorance of women’s action
by the male disciples is condemned by Jesus Christ. Even today
in the family, church or in the society the service of the women
are underestimated and not accepted by the male. But our Lord
Jesus gave a model to accept the service of the women. And also
we should think about the courageous action of that unnamed
woman. Whatever hurdles she might have had, she crossed the
boundaries to accomplish her task and became a true disciple
of Jesus. This is because Jesus recognized, liberated the women
in his society wherever he went. As we are the disciples of Jesus
it is our responsibility to accompany, acknowledge , remember,
accept and empower them.
Woman who are equally created in the image of God
needs to be upheld with dignity and respect. They too are
partners in God’s mission. God had used, and continue to use
woman in His ministry. The Church and individuals must see
with the eyes of God and celebrate the abilities of women.
