ServingLions of District 20-K1 and MD-20 Vol IX, No. 6 Launched:November2013

Under the themes of our International President “Service
from the Heart” and the District Governor’s “Growth through Service – Teaming
Together” we launched our Lionistic journey of service. Despite the COVID
related restrictions, our response has been one of consistent dedication to service as
local needs evolved. And we accomplished our mission, safely and successfully!
We continued our support to Lions Clubs International’s focus on Vision as we conducted traditional
screenings of local youth (where permitted by safety protocols). Our clubs explored opportunities to
team with other private sector organizations with the same focus. Our District Hunger Committee and
clubs continue to provide food distribution services to those in need (shelters and select veteran or
senior housing facilities). In certain emergency situations Lions organized food drives in Brooklyn
within 24 hours of notice. With the global attention to Diabetes, informational literature and local heath
initiatives (Fund Raising Walks) have been conducted. Our district is also participating in the MD20
based grant proposal to establish three local therapists which would provide “hands on” service, expand
testing and provide valuable resource, preventative and maintenance information. The latter is linked
to grant approval. Support to Pediatric Cancer has included clothing and financial donations to a local
hospital providing specialized treatment. Our district Environmental Committee and clubs have
supported various initiatives for gardening, horticulture and NYC park cleanings.
Our focus on humanitarian services shines brightly. Concurrently, we demonstrated the importance of
friendship and fellowship, particularly where neighboring clubs “teamed” with fundraising and
membership growth events. Our district history book will help members to learn more about the
activities and rich legacy of our clubs. It will also serve as a resource to inform our community partners
about Lionism and publicize who we are, what we do, and how we work to meet community needs.
Finally, our journey has allowed many of us to enhance our own personal development by sharpening
our leadership skills and enhancing our knowledge of technology (through classes in Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, and Zoom). Club officers were given the opportunity to increase their expertise via
participation in courses offered by the Lions Learning Center. All such initiatives have helped to support
member and club development that leads to sustainability, growth and the emergence of future
innovative administrators in our district. I express special thanks to our district leaders, officers,
committee chairs and members for your contribution to the district’s success this year.
Let’s continue going forward, growing our membership, giving from the heart, and teaming together.
Let each of us (members and clubs) ask “what needs can I best help address”?
     Anthony B. Cochran
    District Governor 20-K1
