JOINT VENTURE: “FREE FUN DAY / BACK TO SCHOOL”
TO CHANGE THE COMMUNITY
On August 22, representatives from Brooklyn
Crown Heights, Canarsie, Midwood, Marine
Park, and Transition Lions Clubs assembled
at Canarsie Park to set up materials and
prepare to “change the community.”
This collaborative project was sponsored by
Lion Senator Roxanne Persaud’s Office,
Emblem Health, Brooklyn Public Library, New
York City Parks Department, New York City
Police Department, Department of Changing the community by building literacy
Environmental Protection, U.S. Military
Recruitment, Shopper’s World, and Wegmans.
Lions were teamed with other volunteers and
assigned to monitor various child-friendly
stations. Pre-packed student backpacks were
distributed to hundreds of children
accompanied by parents. Other engaging
and entertaining activities included games
with prize-winning opportunities, a relatively
quiet reading corner with a range of age –
age-appropriate literature, face painting,
healthy snacks with drinks, and of course
music for dancing.
It was a mutually awesome experience for all
participants. Lions expressed a feeling of Healthy snacks distributed
satisfaction when they saw the joyful smiles
and excitement on the faces of the children
as they received their backpacks with new
school supplies.
Channel 12 News Brooklyn provided media
coverage televised on the evening broadcast.
